Breathwork FAQs
Breathwork is a powerful tool and you may have some questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is conscious-connected breathwork?
Conscious connected breathwork is a breathing technique that involves a continuous, rhythmic breath pattern with no pauses between the inhale and exhale. With this pattern, the inhale and exhale are commonly done through the mouth. It is a breathing technique that allows us to access our nervous system in a conscious way allowing for deeper connection and integration (healing).
What are the benefits of conscious connected breathwork?
Breathwork can reduce stress, improve mental clarity, release emotional blockages, and create a deeper connection to yourself. It’s also known to boost energy, enhance creativity, and support overall well-being. The more comfortable you become with the practice and experience of trusting yourself and your body the deeper the experience can be.
Do I need experience to try breathwork?
No prior experience is needed, you will be given instructions and are welcome to ask any questions you may have.
What happens during a breathwork session?
The breathwork journey itself has 2 parts, the active phase and the integration phase.
During the active phase, you’ll be guided through the breathing pattern while lying down in a comfortable space. The facilitator will provide breathing cues throughout the journey, and there will be loud rhythmic music and drumming. The facilitator will offer occasional one-on-one verbal and hands-on support (if the breather is comfortable). You may experience a range of sensations, emotions, or memories as you breathe. This is a space to be curious and listen to the body, allowing it to express and release anything that may be arising. No experience is the same and will vary from session to session. The integration phase has the music and breath slow down which allows our system to come into a deeply restful state that allows integration of what's moved through.
Is it safe?
For most people, conscious connected breathwork is safe. However, it’s not recommended for those with certain medical conditions like severe heart issues, epilepsy, or pregnancy and more complicated mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or severe untreated PTSD. If you’re unsure, consult a healthcare provider first.
What should I bring to a session?
Note that you will be lying on the floor for about 1 hour and your temperature will fluctuate, so you want to be comfortable. Bring a yoga mat or something comfortable to lie on, a blanket, a water bottle, a journal if you have one and an open mind. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move and comfortably breathe. It's also best to breathe with an empty stomach so if eating prior to breathwork, eat a smaller meal 30 min - 1 hour before breathing.
Can breathwork help with grief or addiction?
Yes, breathwork can be a powerful tool for processing emotions like grief or breaking patterns associated with addiction. It helps create space for self-awareness and emotional release, supporting personal growth and healing.
How often should I do breathwork?
The frequency depends on your goals and the intensity of your practice.
A shorter daily practice can be supportive of 5 - 15 min. Longer sessions or deeper sessions need a bit more time for integration so I would recommend 1- 2x a month.
